Los Angeles History -- and Future

Eleven families founded the Spanish pueblo we now call Los Angeles on September 4, 1781. This second California settlement was sponsored by the new Governor of California, Felipe de Neve and the pueblo was christened El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula. (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angeles of Porciuncula). There was a speech by Governor de Neve, a blessing and prayers from the mission fathers -- all watched by the Yang-Na Indians.

This tiny agricultural settlement was on the banks of what we now call Los Angeles River.
