Big blooms for little gardenersSunflower seeds are about the easiest and quickest seed to plant and grow into a nice big, tall plants! Sunflowers can grow so big they will tower over you! They grow fast -- and that's impressive. And if you plant the young sunflower plant into a flower garden, you can even see it bloom and turn into a seed head of hundreds or thousands of seeds that are yummy for many birds. Your parents will have as much fun from growing sunflowers as you will. The dinner-plate size flowers are extraordinary and bright yellow. Very cheery! The daisy family also has a number of easy to grow plants that can grow taller than young gardeners. Here are several to consider. You can grow all of them from seeds found at your local garden center or farm store. ZINNIAS These grow easily all across the country -- whether you're in Florida or Washington...you can enjoy the bright colors of Zinnias that also attract a lot of butterflies and bees. Old fashioned varieties can reach two and a half to three feet. They come in all colors: deep reds, oranges, magentas, pinks, whites...and some are even two colors in each blossom. They are easy to cut and last a long time in flower vases. Great gifts for sick friends, or friends who are celebrating a birthday or other special day. BACHELOR's BUTTONS These sky blue plants grow wild along roadways in late spring and summer. The shaggy flowers have many overlapping petals. Some new bachelor buttons come in additional colors: white, pink or maroon. They make beautiful cut flower bouquets, too. MEXICAN SUNFLOWERS These bright, cheery flowers are also called Mexican hats. They are not really sunflowers, but their large vivid orange blooms rival the bright color of sunflowers. There are both short and tall varieties available. In really good soil, a single plant can grow as tall as 6 feet ... that's as tall as an adult! COSMOS These dainty asters have leaves that look a lot like ferns. Their flowers look like daiseys. And they come in many colors: pnk, white, magenta, and orange. They all have yellow centers and they add a beautiful touch to your garden. GLORIOSA DAISIES These are fun, easy to mix flowers. You can grow them with any of the flowers mentioned above. They resemble Black-Eyed Susans and grow quickly from seed.
