Hen and Chicks are some of the cutest plants! These small, neat plants send out runners that form babies or "chicks". They have shallow roots so they are idea for indoor or outdoor rock gardens, containers and stone walls. They thrive in crowded conditions, so they provide a lot of green for tiny spaces. And if you want to share some of the babies, you can divide them at any time during the growing season, or if you're growing them indoors, you can divide them at any time.

To divide the tightly knit family, simply slip a knife or trowel underneath the clump deep enough to include their roots. Their roots are shallow, so this is easy. If the soil has a lot of sand in it, and if it is somewhat moist when you divide the plant, it is possible to pull them out by hand with just a little extra lift from that knife or trowel. Then just cut the runners from the parent plant with a scissors or knife, and let the new plants rest for a couple days in a cool, shady place. This allows a callus to seal the cut and prevent the succulent stem from rotting. Then it's time to replant the baby in a new home! And your family of hen and chicks can grow and share their beauty with your own family or friend!
