"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these
has been deprived of the best part of his education."

Bird Studies: Ornithology
- Partners In Flight focuses on growing concerns about declines in the populations of many land bird species, and the conservation of birds not covered by existing conservation initiatives. The initial focus was on species that breed in the Nearctic (North America) and winter in the Neotropics (Central and South America), but the focus has spread to include most landbirds and other species requiring terrestrial habitats. Strengthened linkages with other conservation efforts is leading, at least in some cases, to comprehensive conservation efforts for the entire avifauna. The central premise of Partners In Flight (PIF) has been that the resources of public and private organizations in North and South America must be combined, coordinated, and increased in order to achieve success in conserving bird populations in this hemisphere. Partners In Flight is a cooperative effort involving partnerships among federal, state and local government agencies, philanthropic foundations, professional organizations, conservation groups, industry, the academic community, and private individuals.
- Journey North Geared towards students, a learning tool that uses the Internet in a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change. Report your sightings...use material in the classroom.
- Students determine the Migrating Birds Know No Boundaries. Bird Watch Central, where you can track several birds on their annual migrations to Africa from Asia and Europe. All "our" birds are outfitted with satellite transmitters that send data to the web site every day, allowing you to observe their progress. Additional data on weather and topographic conditions. This site fully utilizes the Internet to deliver interactive, interdisciplinary curriculum. By following bird species along their migration routes, you'll see the connection between nations and the environment we all share.
- Students determine the Classroom Activities and Ideas project-based learning adventures include a diverse variety from gardening to birding to recycling and composting and coops...and more.
- Audubon Christmas Birds & Science Audubon sponsors many bird programs such as an annual bird census. Volunteers count every individual bird and bird species over one calendar day, within well-defined geographic areas. Audubon presents facts that support understanding of why birds are important indicators of environmental change. Why Birds? Learn more about why birds are an 'ecological litmus paper'
- National Wildlife Health Center a biomedical laboratory dedicated to assessing the impact of disease on wildlife and to identifying the role of various pathogens in contributing to wildlife losses. Wildlife Disease Factsheets are on line for birds and other wildlife.
- Students can access the North American Breeding Bird Survey USGS: The North American Breeding Bird Survey Results and Analysis. Extensive maps, tables and trend estimates for species and population change. Excellent science center for student research.
- Project FeederWatch Project FeederWatch, a winter-long survey of bird populations throughout North America, is conducted by thousands of birdwatchers putting their hobby to work for science. Participants count the birds at their feeders and periodically enter their counts through the Project FeederWatch Data Entry form. The information helps ornithologists track changes in the abundance and distribution of numerous bird species.
